WITH THANKS

This garden grows on a reclaimed lot in Woodlawn, on the traditional homelands of the Council of Three Fires — the Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Odawa. Built in the spirit of Urbs in Horto: a city in a garden, one lot at a time.

THE IDEA
A vacant lot garden is recycling

The most radical thing a neighborhood can do with derelict land is give it back to life.

Many times, we think of recycling as plastic, cans and bottles. But one of the largest things a city wastes is land — the vacant lot, the cleared corner, the parcel left behind. Across Chicago there are tens of thousands of them.

This garden was one of those lots, derelict, underutilized — reclaimed, recycled, and stewarded-up into habitat, food for pollinators, a place to gather, and a piece of the prairie that was here long before the city.

WHAT THE LOT GIVES BACK

CHICAGO’S SOUTH AND WESTSIDE

Neighbors are doing this block by block — turning vacant lots into gardens and gathering places. This lot is one small square of that idea: Urbs in Horto, a city in a garden, recycled one parcel at a time.

A NEW CHAPTER
The Recycling Exhibition

If an underappreciated and underutilized parcel of land can be transformed into a community asset, what other “waste” can be transformed into value. We are taking some clues from the Rebuild Foundation and BuggyGirl Enterprises — a coming exhibition where designers and makers turn cast-off materials into things of beauty and use.

THE RUNWAY
A fashion show, fully reclaimed

Garments built entirely from recycled and salvaged materials walk a runway set in the garden — proof that what we throw away sometimes has 9+ more lives to live.

In planning for a future season. Designers, makers and volunteers welcome — sign up to help shape it.

Know a vacant lot? Make something from nothing?

Every prairie — and every exhibition — starts with someone who sees a garden in empty ground.

STEWARD TRAINING
Tend the garden,
grow the block

A hands-on course for the neighbors who keep this lot alive — learn the plants, the seasons, and the simple work that turns a vacant lot into a living one.

WHY IT MATTERS

A garden survives on the hands that tend it. Every trained steward is one more neighbor who can read the lot, plant a plug, save a seed — and teach the next person. That is how a vacant lot stays a living one.

Sessions run through the growing season. Sign up and we’ll tell you when the next one opens.
